It’s not rocket science to find snook – I’ve been doing this for years and have my secret spots. But here’s what I look for.
CURRENT
Snook are ambush predators that prefer to stay still and pounce on an unsuspecting prey, and current significantly helps them get more food with less effort. So they most often hang around areas that have current and we’re going to use this to our advantage.
STRUCTURE
Just like most ambush-oriented species, snook prefer to hang around structure. They do this because it offers protection from bigger predator fish but also because there are smaller fish they can chomp up.
BAIT
Knowing what to use to catch these elusive fish is the real secret. Snook feed primarily on small fish and crustaceans like shrimp. They are ambush predators and make a distinctive “thump” when they hit a lure or bait. Once hooked, they put up a good fight where they can run and jump.
